GAW know-how for the new kraft paper machine from Mondi Štětí.

GAW Wet End Chemicals Preparation for new Mondi paper machine in Czech Republic.

Mondi Group, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has expanded its mill in Štětí (approximately 50 km north of Prague) with a new paper machine.

The largest producer of paper and pulp in the Czech market and the main supplier for paper bag production within the Mondi Group is setting new standards with this €400 million investment.

The new paper machine was installed on schedule and within budget, and the paper quality is exceptional. The new paper machine will meet the growing demand for paper-based and therefore sustainable flexible packaging with an annual output of approximately 210,000 tons.

GAW technologies is proud to be involved in this outstanding project.

The entire WET END CHEMICALS* processing system, including installation supervision and commissioning, as well as programming, comes from the long-established specialist in the preparation of coating compounds and auxiliaries, automation/digitalization, recycling, and water treatment.

The entire GAW project team would like to thank Mondi for the excellent cooperation and is excited to once again support a customer with advice and assistance as well as our solutions in the field of circular economy, and to accompany Mondi on its path to achieving its 2030 goals.

*What exactly are wet end chemicals?

In order to achieve the desired properties of paper and board, chemical substances, so-called auxiliaries, are used in addition to fibers and fillers. These auxiliaries are also called additives. They are either mixed directly into the paper fiber stream or applied to the paper at specific positions in the paper machine or by an application unit.

A distinction is made between paper additives and process chemicals. Paper additives are components of the finished paper. They primarily remain in the paper during production and serve to impart necessary or desirable properties to the paper. Paper additives include sizing agents, dry and wet strength agents, pigments, dyes, optical brighteners, and coating binders. Process chemicals, on the other hand, serve to control and improve the manufacturing process and keep the system clean and usually only remain in traces in the paper. Process chemicals include retention agents, fixatives, flocculation agents, and slime control agents, as well as defoamers and fabric deaerators.

For an efficient manufacturing and coating process, expert preparation and precise dosing of the additives are essential.
